Looking at Harbour Centre from across Vancouver Harbour

The Building Capacity Project is funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada as part of the country’s National Dementia Strategy. It is an action research initiative in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia. The initiative works through an asset-based community development approach to help communities build capacity for and with people with dementia, by making existing programs and spaces for inclusive, and by developing new programs involving social, recreational, and creative activities.

In Vancouver, the project is a partnership between University of British Columbia, and partner organizations of the Westside Seniors Hub in Vancouver, which is a volunteer-led network of seniors serving agencies, as well as other grassroots organizations in communities throughout the Lower Mainland of British Columbia. The project’s activities occur within the metropolitan and suburban areas of Greater Vancouver (population 4,000,000), as well as in the town of Gibsons (population 5,000) on the Sechelt Peninsula, which is accessible only by ferry.
